A humorous scene of a modern couple surrounded by an overly complex chore spreadsheet, stacked dishes, baby diapers, and a chaotic flowchart on the wall illustrating relationship stages.

Why Do Couples Get Stuck in the Power Struggle Stage of Marriage?

You are not failing at marriage. You are running an outdated blueprint and wondering why the machinery keeps grinding.

Most couples I coach are stuck in the exact same place. They are either locked into rigid, traditional roles from their parents’ generation, or they are exhausted trying to force a perfectly even 50/50 split on everything from dishes to diaper changes. Neither one works. And here is the truth nobody tells you: it is only a problem if you decide it is a problem.

Let’s Look at the Map

Every couple moves through the same five predictable stages of marriage. I have watched this pattern for over four decades, and it never changes.

Romance is the starting line. It is easy, it is effortless, and biology hands it to you for free. You focus on everything you have in common and ignore every red flag waving in your face.

Then the chemicals wear off. Reality walks in the door. Welcome to the Power Struggle.

This is where marriages go to die. Not because the couple stopped loving each other, but because they are fighting over a rulebook nobody agreed to. If this sounds familiar, you are not broken. You are just stuck.

You Don’t Need Two Years on a Couch

You do not need a therapist to hold your hand while you dig through childhood wounds for two years. That is the old model, and for most couples, it is not what actually fixes a marriage.

What you need is a coach. Someone who looks at the real, daily machinery of your relationship and helps you rebuild it. I don’t just listen. I give you the corrective maneuvers to get your household back on track.

The Fix: A Hybrid Approach That Actually Works

Here is what decades of experience have taught me. A modern marriage does not run on tradition and it does not run on a rigid spreadsheet either. It runs on a hybrid model.

A Hybrid Role Partnership. Stop re-playing the same script. Stop being obsessive accountants. You are equal co-owners of this marriage, and you shift responsibilities based on what real life is throwing at you that season. One of you takes the lead when work gets heavy, then you swap. That is not weakness. That is a system that functions.

A Hybrid of Two Models. We blend your emotional connection with your operational system, because you cannot separate the two. If the way you run your household is a disaster, your emotional connection will be a disaster too. I have seen it a thousand times.

The Baseline: The 5 Stages of Marriage

To climb out of the power struggle, you have to know exactly where you are standing.

  1. Romance. You are high on dopamine, focused on similarities, and treating your partner like a flawless prize.
  2. The Power Struggle. Reality sets in. Differences surface, irritation builds, and you burn energy trying to force your spouse back into the fantasy version of who you thought they were.
  3. Stability. The turning point. You finally accept that you cannot change your partner. You set clear boundaries, build routines, and recognize your spouse as a separate person with their own wants, strengths, and limitations.
  4. Commitment. You see every flaw, every annoying habit, every quirk, and you choose this person anyway. Not because you are settling, but because your life is genuinely better with them in it.
  5. Co-Creation. The relationship runs so smoothly you stop spending energy fixing “us.” You turn that shared strength outward, toward businesses, families, and the community around you.

Shift the Machinery Today

If you want out of the struggle, stop waiting for your spouse to magically become a different person. Take control of the system instead.

  • Run a role audit. Get honest about who actually does what in your household.
  • Drop the “shoulds.” Get rid of every rule you inherited from your parents or absorbed from the couple down the street.
  • Assign the lead. Give ownership based on who has the bandwidth right now, then check back in a few months.

Nobody wakes up on their wedding day expecting to Google “marriage counseling” a few years later. But if you are here, you are already doing something most couples never do. You are looking for tools instead of just hoping it gets better on its own.
