Sometimes I hear husbands express frustration about not being respected, or about being disrespected. And often, their wives would love to do whatever they could, if only they knew what he was talking about! So, here are ten practical suggestions to cultivate that vital sense of respect in your marriage
- Lean in and truly hear him when he speaks, resisting the urge to jump in. When he is talking, try to keep a positive expression on your face, even when you disagree with him.
- Send a special snack with him to work. Maybe even enough to share with co-workers.
- Don’t correct him in front of other people. Wait until you are by yourselves. Public critiques can unintentionally wound.
- Don’t ask him a question and then get impatient when he doesn’t answer right away. Allow him the space to gather his thoughts without any pressure of an immediate response. Sometimes, the most thoughtful answers need a little room to breathe.
- Resist the urge to offer unsolicited advice. Grant him the time and space to discover his own solutions.
- Smile at him. He loves that!
- When he walks through the door at the end of the day, pause what you’re doing and greet him with a hug. It’s a beautiful way to acknowledge his return and reconnect.
- Even on days when it feels like a stretch, consciously choose to act with an underlying trust in his ability to handle things. Your belief in him is a powerful affirmation.
- If he likes to be massaged, rub his shoulders for a little while. It’s a tangible way to show you care for his well-being.
- Tell him you appreciate how hard he works to provide for you and the family. Whether he’s the primary breadwinner or contributing in other significant ways, acknowledge his dedication. Remember, respect isn’t about financial contributions alone; it’s about valuing his role and efforts.
It’s a misconception that showing profound respect somehow diminishes your own worth. Quite the opposite! Respect isn’t something demanded or taken; it’s a gift freely given.
Respect is something a husband yearns for from his wife, and when he gets it, he prizes it above all other things. When he feels truly respected, it can be the bedrock of your connection.
